Tell me about yourself.
Hello Jacob and everyone reading this, Neppy here! I’ve been a writer on WordPress for almost one and a half year now, but I took a long hiatus in-between due to work and other happenings so basically one year effective. As seen by my name, my blog exclusively consists of video games at the moment. I’ve been gaming ever since I was about three years old, and have basically never stopped ever since then. I’m currently 24 years old, and I also learned pretty recently that I have an unhealthy addiction to video game collecting! Oh well, I’m still enjoying it~. Nice to meet you all!
Where are you from?
I’m from the Netherlands! I was born here as well and have been living in the same backwater town for my entire life now, though I do have plans to move closer to my workplace now that I got my fulltime contract.
What do you do for a living?
I’m a Junior Software Tester/IT Consultant for a company specialized in developing web applications for airports. Think of it as the administration system that takes care of everything behind the scenes like what halls are occupied etcetera.
What led you to become a blogger?
I’ve always been a fan of discussing the games I play with other people. Living in a backwater town, I’ve never really had anyone to discuss my hobbies with because most people either didn’t game, or only played the ‘’mainstream’’ games. FIFA for example is extremely popular over here, but I personally really dislike soccer. The internet was basically my only option at the time, and I’ve been a very active user on forums where I was able to share my opinions with countless other gamers. I’ve also tried YouTube, but it was clear I’m too much of an introvert to make the videos I want. Or I was too lazy, that works too. Eventually I just came to the realization that Blogging was actually the lifesaver I was looking for. I could write long posts about all sorts of games, and everyone who was interested in them could look them up and discuss them with me. That is my main reason behind becoming a blogger essentially. The other reason is that I am a very forgetful person; if I haven’t played a game in over a year, basically everything that I can remember is if the game was good or not. Writing about them gives me the opportunity to look back on them more easily!
How do you come up with new posts?
At the moment, I’m basing all my posts on what I’ve been playing recently. For example, I start working on reviews right after I beat a game. Most other articles are also based on said games. At the moment I don’t write anything else, though I do still have plans to write something other than reviews in due time. Before I came back from my hiatus, I made a few other articles like Top 5s/10s and love/hate stories where I talk about games in a non-reviewing matter. For the moment however, that is in the back-burner partially because I’m unable to come up with ideas for them.
What has been your most successful post?
I believe my most successful post has been my review of The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero. The main reason being that an unofficial localization for this game was released only a few weeks before I made that review, and the fanbase has been very active on social media with the tag #TrailsFromZero. I used this tag during my playthrough as well just to share my thoughts, and using it when advertising my article paid off. Though admittably, one of my old lists is also still doing very well, being the Top 10 Fate/Grand Order servants. I still see a lot of people visit them every month, so I might make more content for that as well!
What has been your favorite post so far?
From my new writing style, there are two posts that I consider to be my favourite. The first one is my review of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, where I had a running joke going on that I kept using throughout the review. It reflects my writing style very well, which is ‘’a funny- yet informative YouTube video in text format’’. I’m always trying to have this as my aim when writing new articles as well, but it doesn’t always work or it becomes too forced. My other favourite post is a recent one, being my review of all versions of Super Mario Bros. Since I was covering all versions, it gave me for reason to break free from my usual format which I should also do more often. Finally, I really enjoy writing my top 5s/top 10s, but they require more effort and also a lot of thinking so I only do them when I’ve got a good topic and also know what to place on there.
What is one thing you wish you knew when you started blogging?
When it comes to what I wish I knew before I started blogging, my answer would be how hard it is for a new blogger to gain a steady ground. Getting traffic on your website is one thing I knew would be hard, but what I didn’t expect was how… anti-blogger a lot of social media and sharing places are. I’ve ranted about this before, but I’ve tried to share my blog in multiple Facebook groups, on Steam communities and so many more places just to have them removed and getting a warning as a result. I’ve actually been fighting quite actively with moderators on all of these platforms, because they have no problem with people sharing Twitch streams and YouTube videos, but sharing a blog post is an absolute sin. Obviously I never won the discussions since Moderators are holy and always right but yeah, I really wish I knew all of this beforehand. Fortunately it gets better the more posts you make!
If you could pick your dream job, what would it be?
That’s… actually a really good question! I’ve never really thought about it to be honest. I could of course say that I would love to game for my dream job, but that’s such a boring answer. I am possibly working towards being a video game tester in the future though, since it’s not too far away from what I’m currently doing but at the same time I really enjoy my current job so I might stay here for the unforeseeable future if they allow me. Other than that it’s rough for me to come up with an answer, since I am always afraid of the negatives. For example, I would love to be a bullettrain operator over in Japan, but they are extremely strict when it comes to arrival times. An Archeologist or “Tomb Raider” would also be very cool but let’s be honest: that job nowadays is nowhere near the same as how they portray it in fictional media. What else is there… I also kind of want to be a drummer even though I’ve never played on a drum before. I should really try that out already…
What is your favorite book of all-time?
When it comes to books, it always varies for me. As of right now, I really enjoyed Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman. I am a huge fan of mythologies, and Neil has been able to scratch that itch very well. There’s a good amount of different stories from the mythology and I really enjoyed reading them. Coincidentally, I’m not done yet with reading the entire book as I didn’t really have the opportunity to sit down and focus on the book exclusively, but I also can’t wait to continue.
What is your favorite video game of all-time?
Like books, my favourite game also varies from time to time. The games that have held this title the longest are both The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Final Fantasy VI. But at my current age, a third title—or rather, franchise—has joined these ranks, namely The Legend of Heroes series. This is a series of games that I personally like to compare to the Marvel Cinematic Universe; the franchise has a whole bunch of smaller sub-franchises (Trails in the Sky, Trails of Cold Steel etc.) that all have their own stories, but they all build up to one massive endgame. The world building is absolutely superb, and you know that term ‘’the rabbit hole goes deeper’’? That happens a lot, and it never stops with the plot twists. Truly a franchise of games that I recommend to everyone who has the time to spare, since they do require your full attention when you do. Like, once you’re in and you do enjoy what’s going on… you’ll never leave. Never.
Who is your favorite fictional character of all-time?
My favourite character from fictional media also often varies, but most of the time I return to a single answer, being Hibiki from Kantai Collection. Funnily enough it’s not a game I play, but I adore her character and I have many great profile pictures of her as well that I use on various platforms! Hibiki has a very quiet and stoic personality, which is also reflected in her voice. It’s a personality I’m very fond of, as I also tend to be the same in real life (especially when it comes to a monotone voice haha). Admittably, it’s also her looks as to why I like her so much as silver hair in games or fictional media is usually my favourite. Oh, and she’s Russian so she occasionally throws some random Russian words into her dialogue which is great! The internet has also been able to make great use of this knowledge!
